Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin and to the normal transport of oxygen in the body. During pregnancy, iron requirements are increased.

Folate (folic acid) contributes to normal blood formation and growth of maternal tissues during pregnancy. Taking a folate supplement increases folate levels in pregnant women. Low folate levels in pregnant women are a risk factor for neural tube defects in the developing fetus.*

Iron contributes to normal energy metabolism and to reducing fatigue. It also contributes to the normal transport of oxygen in the body.

*This positive effect is observed when supplementing with at least 400 µg of folic acid per day during the period from at least one month before conception until three months after.
