Bon à savoir
Good to know about Vitamin B
All eight B vitamins are water soluble. As a result, the body is only able to store them in small quantities and it must therefore be supplied regularly.
They were numbered in ascending order, but today we see gaps in the numbering, because certain substances were listed before it was realized that they were not vitamins strictly speaking or that certain B vitamins were listed twice.
Thus, choline was described as vitamin B4, but was later found to be non-essential since the body is capable of producing choline itself.
Another example: folic acid was “discovered” or rather identified twice and called vitamins B9 and B11, even though they are the same molecule.
Did you know?
• Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) colors urine bright yellow, which is normal and should absolutely not cause alarm.
• Whole grain products are rich in vitamin B1 (thiamine). In cereals it is found mainly in the germ, so most of it is lost during milling.
• B vitamins are heat labile and therefore a large quantity can be destroyed during food preparation.
• The terms “folic acid” and “folate” find their etymology in the Latin word “folium” (leaf).
